Minnesota has more "big" trees – greater than 19 inches in diameter – than it had 50 years ago.
Location: Common throughout Minnesota except the extreme northeastern part. (Also found in Lake, Central and Mid-Atlantic States.)
Fun Facts: Fine, even texture; straight grain; high shrinkage in drying, but rarely in use; easily worked; large, heart-shaped leaves with small "teeth"; small, spherical nut-like fruits in bundles
Uses: carving; Venetian blinds; molding; piano keys; patterns; sash and door frames
Full Size: 70-80 feet in height, 2-3 feet in diameter
Age at Maturity: 80 years
